Naturally I interpreted the topic of balance through an interior design lens, with wallpapers and pattern repeats being the first images to come to mind. I have not taught my students if they finish the year without learning about William Morris!

Students in Years 6 and 7 learned about the design principle of balance, the concept of visual weight, and three ways artists and designers can achieve a sense of stability in their work. They also studied the visual characteristics of William Morris designs and applied their knowledge to produce formally balanced floral patterns. Students created their design on one side of a fulcrum and used tracing paper to create the mirror image on the other side, before applying vivid colours to finish their designs.
