In exploring a different approach to drawing, I wanted my kids to know about Jim Lambie’s Zobop and anything and everything by Yayoi Kusama. Whilst we didn’t have enough tape for Zobop or the patience to create an infinity net, we cut, rolled, laid, squished, and twisted plasticine to create 2-dimensional images bursting with dots, lines, colour, and pattern.

As part of their unit on Discovery, Year 6s and 7s explored a more unconventional approach to drawing by sculpting plasticine on board. In researching and transcribing the work of Jim Lambie and Yayoi Kusama, they looked at how contemporary artists can fill spaces with pattern and colour. As they created their images manipulating plasticine, students were encouraged to activate the entire image and work through ‘mistakes’ constructively.
