In a brief drawing task to start the year, I encouraged my Grade 11s to exercise their skills in observation by quickly sketching a still life scene in front of them.

In a series of timed drawing exercises, they worked in charcoal to depict the contours, shapes, forms, and areas of light and dark in simple still life scenes made from a variety of objects, including large seashells, a pair of sandals, an iron and various bottles. They then finished one charcoal study using the elements of art to communicate the subject of their still life.
