Mixed Media Collages
16 March 2018
After several weeks of drawing and painting, I wanted my kids to cleanse their palette and experience the meditative joy of working with materials like felt and wool, and sequins, buttons, and beads. Rather than reinvent the wheel, in this project focusing on variety, I revisited an old project that turned out to be a surprise success with my Year 2s in a previous school. As I expected, the kids spun gold from thread in sugary sweet images of sliced fruits and vegetables.
In this project focusing on variety, Year 10 and 11 students made observational drawings exploring the patterns, shapes, and lines in sliced fruit and vegetables. They then translated their drawings into mixed media collages, in which they cut and created various shapes and layered their work with a range of materials, including felt, string, and buttons.
All 44 individual pieces were mounted together, and the final piece will be the newest addition to the canteen.
