For my Year 6s and 7s –and some of my Year 10s as well– monoprinting offered a new way of working that combines drawing and printmaking. We got oil-based ink everywhere, but the results were worth the extra time cleaning up. Once dry, the kids added a pop of colour with oil pastel.
As part of their unit on Discovery, Year 6s and 7s looked at alternative ways to create images. Art elements of line and shape and design principles of rhythm and radial balance were emphasized in this printmaking project centred on fruits and vegetables, including sliced red onions, lemons, pomegranates, kiwi, and cucumber. Students referenced images of sliced fruits and vegetables as they made drawings on printing plates, and they later used oil pastel to add selective colour to their monoprints.
